Food and land use in 2050

A new issue of INRAE Sciences sociales, dedicated to healthy diet and land use on a global scale in 2050, has just been published.

Could we achieve a healthy global diet in 2050 without expanding agricultural land? This is the question that INRAE Sciences sociales n°4-5/2025, co-authored by Agneta Forslund, seeks to answer. To do so, researchers have used the GlobAgri-AE2050 balance model to estimate, for 21 regions of the world, the cropland and grazing land requirements in 2050 induced by the adoption of healthier diets, based on projections of supply and demand for agricultural products and taking into account the impact of climate change on crop yields, grazing intensities and maximum cultivable areas.
